My Brother – A poem by Kim Larocque

Our siblings push buttons that cast us in roles we felt sure we had let go of long ago – the baby, the peacekeeper, the caretaker, the avoider…. It doesn’t seem to matter how much time has elapsed or how far we’ve traveled. – Jane Mersky Leder

I’ve watched you cry when you were only 8

I held your hand, I didn’t wait

To tell you then, « It will be ok »

Things will get better on another day.

You were so sad,

I held my tears.

Took a deep breath

and shed those fears.

For I, from then on,

Took care of you,

I was only 10,

but no one knew..

I would change my title;

from sister to mother

so young, so young;

to care for my brother.

We were young then

and so it goes;

my heart is still aching

from years of woes.

I see you cry,

an adult now,

all I can do

is pray somehow.

My rôle is this :

To be your friend

years and years

of suffering must end.

I love you and miss you

so God damned much.

Please come out..

and see my touch.

A mother to my children

A sister to you.

Please take a step

and we will sail me and you.

To the outside world, we all grow old. But not to brothers and sisters. We know each other as we always were. We know each other’s hearts. We share private family jokes. We remember family feuds and secrets, family griefs and joys. We live outside the touch of time. – Clara Ortega
