In May 2012 I had the honor to interview Jessica Kristie about her poetry collection Threads of Life (please see interview here). When Jessica told me I was the muse for one of her poems, I was touched, but not more touched than I am now, because the day I first read it, I was in a dark place, concentration was low, and numbness overwhelmed me. Today, I can truly appreciate the words you are now about to read. Thank you Jessica.
Back in October Kim was discussing depression. I admired her transparency and ability to be honest in a public setting. It inspired me to write this poem that centered around the need to reach out and listen. Sometimes we ignore the things that are uncomfortable or awkward around us, even if that means letting those we love down. I also wanted to touch on the importance of not ignoring those we may not know that are hurting. The person sitting next to us at the library or in the waiting room, the person in our office we’ve never spoken to, the homeless man on the street… sometimes the comfort and ear of a stranger can make all the difference in the world.
