Introducing Karen L. Boncela. I met Karen on Twitter this year, as she host’s a question of the week on her blog, and I love to go visit and give some answers. Karen has been through some dark times, and I am inspired to see how life can take wonderful turns, as hers has the past few years.
On to our interview:
TELL US YOUR LATEST NEWS
SO EXCITED! I waited for six months after submitting my First Book to the very well known Bookshopin my hometown and finally just this past Saturday I was invited to come in and sign a Contract with them to put my book on their shelf for sale! Now it’s available in Anderson’s Bookshop in downtown Naperville as well as Amazon. It’s such a HUGE accomplishment for me, like a dream come true.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST CONSIDER YOURSELF A WRITER?
I first considered myself a Writer about three years ago. I’d been taking notes for a year or so of things that were happening in my Life that I wanted to remember. As I felt like my second Life was beginning, I realized that I didn’t want to forget a single detail! When I started to put all my notes together in a Journal of sorts, a really beautiful story started to unfold. No one was more surprised than me with the result.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE WORDS TO LOVE BY?
It was not what but who inspired me to write WORDS TO LOVE BY.
About four years ago, I happened to meet a man in the most unexpected way that changed my Life completely. He has since become my Husband. He and the Love that we share is what inspired me to write my first book!
DO YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC WRITING STYLE?
One of my Readers has clarified my Current Writing Style for me in her Review on Amazon. She called it Easy and Conversational. I call it my Current Style because I’m not sure what I’m capable of doing in the future as far as my Writing goes.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE TITLE?
I really just let the Story flow through my head as I tried to think of a catchy title. Words to live by is a common phrase that I thought was part of the message of my book and I just thought that WORDS TO LOVE BY was so appropriate. As soon as I said it out loud I knew it was perfect!
IS THERE A MESSAGE IN WORDS TO LOVE BY THAT YOU WANT READERS TO GRASP?
Yes, there’s a HUGE but very often overlooked message.
We each have the Power within us to Choose Happiness in this short Life that we are gifted and it’s TOTALLY our call. Often times it means stepping way out of our comfort zone and making difficult choices to create what we desire. I’ve always said, NO GUTS, NOGLORY!
ARE EXPERIENCES BASED ON SOMEONE YOU KNOW OR EVENTS IN YOUR OWN LIFE?
Words to Love By is based totally on events in my own Life.
IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE WHICH WRITER WOULD YOU CONSIDER A MENTOR?
One of my favorite Authors is Nicholas Sparks. I think that his and my writing Styles are similar. I Love his honest Stories.
One of my all time favorite books is a simple one written by Robert James Waller, Bridges of Madison County. I feel like my Words To Love By is very similar in Intensity.
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU ARE NOT WRITING?
There are so many things I do. I spend lots of time with my two grown daughters who have through the years become my best friends. My son has two fabulous children; a ten year old boy and a two month old girl. I spend as much time with them as possible.
Along with my own Writing, I love to read. I love working in my garden in the summer and cooking all year round. I’ve been asked by many people to write a Cookbook as well which I just may get to yet!
Most importantly, I spend as much time as I can with my new husband travelling to his hometown on Long Island, going to Movies, out to dinner, out for walks or snuggling with him on the couch watching TV, doesn’t matter really as long as we are together.
WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT PROJECTS?
I’m working on my second book now. I just signed up to be one of twenty-five Authors in a Literary Festival to be held early in October in a local town near me. I’m very excited as I prepare for that.
I’m on Twitter a lot chatting with other Authors, learning from them and I work on my Blog regularly always trying to improve the appearance and the content for its visitors.
IF YOU HAD TO DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN, WOULD YOU CHANGE ANYTHING IN YOUR LATEST BOOK?
Sometimes I think I might, can’t believe some of the personal things I’ve told about myself, what readers are reading about me. But on the other hand, I think that the personal part of it is what draws in my readers and makes them trust me enough to continue reading and to look forward to the next book which will be just as brutally honest.
CAN YOU SHARE A LITTLE OF YOUR CURRENT WORK WITH US?
Yes! My second book is a Prequel to my first. It’s the Story of Karen and the dark tunnel she found herself in after a tumultuous thirty-two year marriage. It’s the Story of the AWAKENING that occurred in her Life through a Series of Events that finally opened her eyes to the fact that she indeed could choose to be happy and could be brave enough to make the necessary changes in her thoughts and actions to make her way out into the light of Happiness. It’s a true story of first heartbreak and then Ecstasy.
The title will be revealed on my Blog soon. www.karenlboncela.com
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU FIND PARTICULARLY CHALLENGING IN YOUR WRITING?
Like almost all AUTHORS, I sometimes have a hard time finding the hours that I need to write. To really accomplish a good chunk of writing, I need at least a few hours of uninterrupted time to get my thoughts in the right direction to continue where I’d left off the time before and to picture myself in the middle of it once again.
WHO DESIGNED THE COVER?
It was a collaborative effort between me and the greatest independent Publisher I could have found. The original photo was actually taken by my husband when we were visiting his family in New York. Smithtown, on Long Island, is his hometown. Long Island has some beautiful beaches and Jones Beach is where that picture was taken. We love it there!
DID YOU LEARN ANYTHING FROM WRITING YOUR BOOK AND WHAT WAS IT?
I’ve learned so much because of writing my first book! First and foremost, I’ve learned that I am capable of so much more than I used to think. I’m so grateful to have realized this at a point in my life where I still have time to enjoy and develop this skill.
I’ve also learned a lot about the people around me, old friends and new. WORDS TO LOVE BY is the kind of Story that just draws people in. I realized that we humans really NEED these Stories of LOVE and HOPE and COURAGE to help us to be grateful and to move on with our own lives in the most worthwhile way possible, never wasting a moment!
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR OTHER WRITERS?
Relish every moment of every part of your Writing experience from your first notes to the published finished work. Everything in between is such an incredible learning experience. Once you have what you think is a valuable manuscript, do whatever it takes to get it out there. Try every avenue
You can count on lots of Rejections before you accomplish your Goal. Expect them and you won’t be surprised. I remember how thrilled I was with the first Rejection Letter, just thinking that a Literary Agent actually had my letter in her hands and was reading about MY BOOK!
WHERE CAN WE BUY YOUR BOOKS?
IF HOLLYWOOD MADE A MOVIE ABOUT YOUR BOOK, WHOM WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE PLAY THE LEAD ROLES?
So funny you should ask because I’ve thought about this many times!
- Karen would be Diane Lane
- Eddie would be Tom Selleck
- David would be played by Alec Baldwin
And it would be HOT! LOL
WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE HANGOUT?
Jones Beach on Long Island in New York with Eddie anytime but in the summer, when it’s less populated. I can spend hours there just looking out at the ocean as the breeze blows through my hair and Eddie’s arms are wrapped around me. I feel the definite presence of a Higher Power there, that same Power that somehow led me to Eddie, the LOVE of my LIFE.
NAME 3 THINGS YOU’D LOVE TO RECEIVE AS GIFTS.
I love flowers. Gift Card for a Mani-Pedi and a Gift Card for Amazon to download books to my Kindle.
Karen L. Boncela is a mother of three grown children and a grandmother to two so far. She lives in a suburb of Chicago with her husband who she adores. She’s lived long enough to learn some of life’s tough lessons and she’s come out on the other side so much smarter and incredibly grateful.
She is without a doubt a “people“person and it’s good thing because had she been alone during the dark times, Karen is not sure she would have ended up where she is today.
Inspired by the love of her Life to write her first book, Words To Love By, and enamored by her first writing experience, Karen is currently working on her second book.
